WHO SHOULD START A RECRUITMENT AGENCY?

We’re is often asked “Who is the ideal person to start their own recruitment agency?” and there are many different answers to this question. Sometimes the best recruiters do not always make the best directors of their own recruitment agency as they cannot manage their responsibilities when it comes to running a company, managing their cashflow and keeping up with their HMRC obligations. So who should start a recruitment agency? Based on the new start-up agencies that we’ve has seen over the past 20+ years, the most successful ones have previously been one of the below: –

TOP BILLING RECRUITERS

Top billing recruitment consultants are the ideal candidates to start their own agency if they can replicate their success again under their own direction and steam. These recruiters will need to ensure they have worked in a 360 capacity (i.e. be able to complete the full recruitment process of finding the client, placement and candidates and matching them together) and often generate new opportunities as they may be under restrictive covenants. The main learning curve will be understanding how to run a company and managing and developing a team.

MANAGERS WITHIN A RECRUITMENT AGENCY

Managers within recruitment agencies will often have the business mindset ingrained in them from looking after a team and sometimes managing costs and setting targets. This makes them an ideal candidate to start their own agency as they will have the business acumen and understanding of what is involved in growing a company unit. Often managers will also have 360 experience prior to managing a team, although some will have to get back on the phones when they start their new business which can be an enlightening experience for them.

RECRUITERS WHO HAVE STARTED A NEW DESK

Sometimes there are recruiters within an agency who are set a challenge to start a new desk within a new specialism or industry. This can be particularly challenging as the recruiter has to research the industry, source the clients and candidates and quickly become an expert in the field. If a recruiter can build a new desk from scratch for someone else, they certainly can do the same for themselves with much larger rewards.

WHO SHOULD START A RECRUITMENT AGENCY?

Recruitment consultants that have the above experience should seriously consider starting their own agency as the financial and long-term rewards compared to being an employee are much larger.
